Perceived Barriers to Research Among Dominant vs. Nondominant Groups of Computer Science Education Researchers

Sun, April 14, 1:15 to 2:45pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

The overarching goal of this study was to determine if subgroups of CSEd researchers reported certain barriers to conducting research and to achieving diversity at equivalent rates. Results from chi-square tests of independence indicated that CSEd researchers in dominant ethnicity and gender groups (i.e., White and Cis-gender male) reported low self-efficacy and insufficient knowledge of education research theory at similar rates to those in the non-dominant groups. These results also emerged when comparing those in research-focused academic institutions compared to other types of institutions. Regarding challenges to achieving diversity in the CSEd research community, BIPOC CSEd researchers were more likely than White researchers to report insufficient diversity among the community members as a challenge. Other null results are discussed.
