Abstract

In the context of widespread learning disruptions and instruction challenges for teachers, it is important to examine the efficacy of educational technology implementations aimed at alleviating the burden on teachers and helping students close learning gaps. In this paper, we examine the implementation and efficacy of one popular online learning platform, IXL, used by one of the authors to support math instruction with four different cohorts of adolescent and adult learners in 2022-23. Quantitative results indicated that IXL usage was associated with significant growth in mathematics for learners in Arkansas. Moreover, qualitative results indicated that absolute growth equivalent to multiple grade levels, even for students far below enrollment grade standing, increased students’ self-efficacy and confidence to study college math.
