An Exploration of Instructional Designers’ Prioritization of Competencies (Poster 25)

Fri, April 12, 7:45 to 9:15am, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall A

Abstract

This study explores instructional designers' (IDs) perspectives on their prioritization of competencies relevant to their professional practices. The competencies examined in this study come from the 2012 International Board of Standards for Training, Performance, and Instruction (ibstpi) Instructional Designer Competencies. The study utilizes Q methodology, a unique approach that combines qualitative and quantitative techniques, to explore participants’ subjective viewpoints regarding the 22 ID competencies. The study reveals two important factors, named as blueprint architect and harmony conductor for understanding ID prioritization. The blueprint architect values the creation and implementation of instructional design and development processes, while the harmony conductor focuses on managing instructional design projects, including internal collaborative projects and external partnerships and relationships.
