Designing Conversation Cards to Support Critical Data Literacy (Poster 41)

Fri, April 12, 7:45 to 9:15am, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall A

Abstract

Critical data literacy—understanding, critiquing, and participating in data activities with attention to who data represents and what data can do—is an increasingly important competence given the rising ubiquity of data. Yet, there are few examples in educational research that explicitly describe how to facilitate conversations about critical data literacy. In this work, we develop conversation cards to support data literacy conversations. Through two rounds of playtesting with researchers and educators, we examine the card conditions and instructions that facilitate critical perspectives. We report on two narratives of how the cards can invite participants to (1) draw from personal experiences to consider larger data patterns and (2) synthesize different perspectives in discussing data types and representations.
