This qualitative study examines how rural educators perceive their program’s impact when leading STEM afterschool programs for academically advanced students in the middle grades. The impact of living and leading programs in a rural community were also explored through semi-structured interviews. Five themes were derived from the study including: the importance of talent identification and out-of-level testing access, the use of place-based approaches and community assets, access to resources in the local area and region, the creation and implementation of relevant and engaging activities to promote passion and interest, and the role of competing priorities on consistent implementation and sustainability. Implications for rural innovation and talent development for advanced students are discussed.
