Palestine in Social Studies State Standards: Combating the Erasure and Paving for Possibilities

Sat, April 13, 1:15 to 2:45pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

This paper is an analysis of US social studies state standards that focus on the ex/inclusion of Palestine with content. Framing around AsianCrit and TribalCrit and using critical discourse analysis, Palestine is largely excluded from content specific standards, while skilled based standards provide possibilities to incorporate Palestine in social studies teaching. This study adds to the literature on standards analysis and includes discussion of Palestine and Palestinians into the scholarship. It is important for teachers and teacher educators to learn about Palestine and emphasize that Palestine must be included within social studies education.
