A Systematic Review of Ideology in Empirical Social Studies Research

Sat, April 13, 1:15 to 2:45pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

I conduct a review of ideology within empirical social studies educational research and analyze its impact on the field. I begin by providing historical context on the concept, its philosophical directions analyzing how ideology has been understood, and then synthesize the last twenty years of educational research on the topic. By creating a research scope for this area, I hope to determine how an often-discursive concept is understood in relation to other concepts and the implications of these choices on the field. I hoped to better understand what ideas and interpretations are taken up by researchers and how these considerations impact the field.
