In 2021, Midwest Urban University instituted a new tenure and promotion pathway, the Balanced-Integrative DEI case, through which faculty candidates are able to demonstrate excellence across an array of integrated scholarly activities aligned with diversity, equity, and inclusion. This paper describes the experiences of ten participants, five Black and five White, as they prepared their documentation for the DEI case in its first year made available (2022). To further illustrate these experiences, we draw from case studies of the five Black participants. The paper concludes with discussion of the challenges and further support needed for this pathway to be a truly viable and equitable option for faculty.
