Creating Queer-Inclusive Social Studies Classrooms: LGBTQ+ Educator Perspectives on the Benefits of Pushing Back Against Hate in Schools

Sun, April 14, 3:05 to 4:35pm, Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, Floor: Level 3, Room 303

Abstract

Our paper presents queer social studies teacher and teacher educator perspectives on dismantling anti-gay and anti-trans* ideologies and practices in PK-12 public schools. Using queer and sociocultural theories, we examine queer perspectives on championing LGBTQ+ inclusive histories and classrooms in service of combating anti-LGBTQ+ legislation and sentiments. Our paper will identify specific benefits of queer-inclusive educational spaces. We will identify recommendations for educator preparation programs and K-12 schools in ways to build LGBTQ+ inclusive spaces and curricular trajectories.
