JoteríaCrit: Constructing New Decolonial Educational Possibilities

Abstract

Jotería is an academic field of decolonial relationality and praxis. As a theory, it delves into the unique ways Jotería practicing individuals navigate ongoing colonial structures, societal norms, prejudice, and discrimination while highlighting their contributions to culture and knowledge. Methodologically, it embraces qualitative research to foster self-reflection and cultural solidarity. Jotería consciousness prioritizes lived, embodied experiences to dismantle colonial violence, racism, and cishetero patriarchy in educational contexts. We discuss its urgency and promise for education and delineate six issues central to jotería studies in education and offer concrete ways to approach JoteríaCrit in education to ensure its decolonial potentiality and coalitional vision remains central to its project.
