This poster surveys the landscape of contemporary theoretical and methodological approaches to researching multimodality in three ways. First, we synthesize theoretical perspectives that have been influential to the field of multimodality, including social semiotics, multiliteracies, new materialism, and affect theory and describe key findings within each that have shaped scholarship in the field of multimodality. Then, we describe prominent methodological approaches and innovative techniques that have been useful for understanding complex multimodal processes and products. Finally, we outline new directions for conceptualizing and investigating multimodal meaning-making.
