Fri, April 12, 11:25am to 12:55pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 100, Room 118B

Abstract

The overarching objectives of this paper are to explore programs and curricula that develop K-12 students’ interest in active learning, environmental consciousness and awareness about local and global issues, community engagement, critical thinking, problem-solving, and citizenship and leadership skills. This study employs a qualitative methodology (multi-case study) that focuses on investigating the culturally responsive, nature-based environmental education curriculum and programs to ascertain how they meet the needs of K-12 students. Concurrent data collection and analysis were employed that were grounded in the lived experiences of the research participants. This study’s research insights may be beneficial for crafting strategies to promote nature-based outdoor environmental education in K-12 classrooms, especially in high-need schools serving Indigenous and minoritized student populations.
