This demonstration employs counterstory methodology to highlight and combat racelighting in education as K-12 educators, teacher-educators, and higher education administrators. Racelighting is an “act of psychological manipulation where Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) receive racial messages that distort their realities and lead them to second-guess themselves” (Racelighting, 2023). This unique demonstration format counteracts racial oppression by uplifting stories of racelighting across educational contexts and strategizing resistance. After the counterstories, four of the most prominent scholars in this burgeoning field will discuss the implications of addressing instances of racelighting. Finally, we will offer up the chance for audience members to share their counterstories and means of resistance, engaging in both this methodology and its challenge to racist dominant narratives.
