What’s Worth Experiencing? Insights at the Intersection of William H. Schubert and Ocean Vuong

Sat, April 13, 11:25am to 12:55pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

At the intersection W. H. Schubert’s (1986) "Curriculum: Perspective, Paradigm, & Possibility" and Ocean Vuong’s (2019) "On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous" are insights into perennial curricular queries of what’s worth experiencing and wondering. Three modes of inquiry are used to explore and analyze synergies between Schubert’s and Vuong’s texts: a lens of philosophy - William H. Schubert’s scholarship, 2) a lens of imagination – Ocean Vuong’s fiction, and 3) personal and collective reflection and discourse. The interplay between literature and life is a valuable source for personal and professional inquiry and reflection. The synthesis of these components creates a broad canvas that evokes what Schubert (1991) calls an interactive epistemology.
