Phenomenological Inquiry of (Intercultural) Relationships in Teacher Education: Through a Cultural Concept of Inyeon

Sun, April 14, 1:15 to 2:45pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

Despite the significance of exploring relationships in educational practice, research on relationships in education has been limited. The study addresses this gap by investigating preservice teachers' relationships with a course topic and how they navigate relationships within a U.S. teacher education setting. Drawing on the Korean cultural concept of inyeon and intersectionality theory, this research delves into the various causes and conditions that influence preservice teachers' intercultural interactions and their relationships with course curriculum. The analysis sheds light on how students actively engage in both direct and indirect relationships with the topics addressed in teacher education courses. This study calls for the need to recognize the intricate and multifaceted relationships that students bring into and navigate within teacher education.
