Same Storm, Different Boats: Engaging Students in Historical Empathy With Local History Research About the Pandemic

Abstract

Following up on our 2023 preliminary findings, we examined whether secondary students could demonstrate historical empathy through conducting local history research and life writing about the COVID-19 pandemic. Major findings show that students displayed historical empathy through analysis of archival research, primary source examination, and personal reflections to engage in life writing by creating an exhibit and companion book.
