Another Present Moment: Recrafting and Reactivating a Better World Through an Art Museum Show

Sun, April 14, 9:35 to 11:05am, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

This presentation involves a major art exhibition at the Smithsonian American Art Museum designed to catalyze methods of social activism. The research team takes up the call of the exhibition and AERA to examine how art and associated methods can be developed to encourage social change. Taking different critical frames of reference, we combine our work to show: (a) territorial assemblage, (b) critical hip hop, (c) Power, knowledge, and color, and (d) queer moments, and how we organize, sample, and depict multivocal perspectives. We encourage similar samplings of art in ways that might help to transform intolerable social practices that too often seem to be stuck in past rather than in making a habitable present.
