Baccalaureate and Doctoral Trajectory Networks of Ph.D.s in the United States in STEM Fields by Race

Fri, April 12, 3:05 to 4:35pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

Although the doctoral education has been expanding in the U.S., historically marginalized students have been underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. Moreover, where each racial group earned their degrees needs more exploration. Therefore, this study described the relationship between baccalaureate and doctoral institutions of PhDs in STEM fields in the U.S. with social network analysis. Analyzing the Survey of Earned Doctorate data between 1980 and 2011, this study compared central institutions of PhD productions by racial groups. Overall, the University of California-Berkeley and Pennsylvania State University-Main Campus were central universities in producing PhDs. Prestigious universities and Minority Serving Institutions had a significant role in producing racial minority PhDs. However, White was the dominant group among PhDs.
