Attracting and retaining culturally diverse students is one of the contemporary higher education institutions’ strategies for internationalization. However, due to linguistic and cultural barriers, the sojourner students encounter challenges in gaining equal opportunities in education and social participation. Through the theoretical lens of critical digital literacy, this study investigated how these sojourner students leveraged social media to adapt to a new academic context. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 10 Mainland Chinese students at a Hong Kong university. Findings indicated that critical digital literacy is a powerful tool in the relationship between social media use and adaptation to higher education in a novel context.
