The Multicultural Distress, Racism, and Stress Experienced by Black Undergraduates at a Predominantly White Institution

Sun, April 14, 9:35 to 11:05am, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

Undergraduates appear to experience a similar level of general stress based on race (Turner, 2021). Predominantly White Institutions (PWI) allocate resources to “assistance” marginalized students, but none have successfully created an inclusive climate, especially for Black students. The purpose of this research was to investigate three different stressors faced by marginalized college students attending a PWI. The findings indicated no significant differences in stress based on race, but a significant difference in multicultural distress and racism experienced by Black students. PWIs must improve their campus climate and thoroughly look at possible systems of oppression that are deeply rooted within their institution.
