The most widely used instruments measuring student experiences for quality assurance internationally are based on two conceptual models from the West: student engagement and course experience. In Hong Kong universities, the latter is mostly adopted with quantitative validation only. Through focus groups with 42 students, this study captured an indigenous picture of student experiences in a Hong Kong university. Seven dimensions of experiences were found crucial to students’ graduate attributes development: one consistent with course experience literature (effective teaching), three with engagement literature (quality interaction, supportive environment, and richness of experience), and three new (effective learning, individual factors, and curriculum design). These indicate the importance of developing an indigenized and comprehensive instrument to measure student experiences for quality assurance.
