Critical Humility as a Framework for Implementing Asian American Curriculum in K–12

Thu, April 11, 4:20 to 5:50pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

While the push for more Asian American history to be taught in schools is a positive move toward combating harmful stereotypes and preventing bias, it becomes even more imperative to envision a framework that allows us to both push the boundaries of our own understandings while sustaining critical engagements with Asian American histories and communities. This article proposes critical humility foregrounded by Asian Critical Race Theory as a way to approach Asian American history mandates in K-12. Doing so can 1) de-center Asian American history from the American Dream, 2) re-imagine Asian American history as more than an add-on, and 3) reveal and strengthen interracial solidarity.
