Imagining Possibility With Bimodal High-Touch Strategies in Hy-Flex Courses (Poster 39)

Sat, April 13, 1:15 to 2:45pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall A

Abstract

Augmenting the student experience by offering hy-flex courses has become an increasingly popular strategy to increase student-centered course delivery options while also supporting educational continuity in a declining enrollment era. But what remains in dispute is whether hy-flex is the ‘black mirror of higher education” or the future multimodal experience that students will expect (Penrod, 2022; Schaberg, 2022). This qualitative study explored student and instructor perceptions of five hy-flex courses in a teacher education program and a counseling program where collaborative pedagogical practices are necessary, and social access to peers is essential. Findings reveal that emphasizing bimodal high-touch engagement strategies, increased engagement, and access to building connections, and has the potential to address systemic barriers to accessing higher education.
