This paper brings together two areas – Sociology of Innovation and Actor-Network Theory to study and implement the integration of technology in teaching and learning that incorporates a critical innovation perspective. Such a perspective considers the complex side effects on teachers, students, communities, caregivers, and schools introduced by information and communication technologies. It uses this perspective to look at the impacts of technology innovation in education on race and racial inequalities. Educational administrators, instructional technologists, and teachers can develop insights into conceptions of innovation that highlight the multiple forms that innovation can take, while considering the side effects introduced by ICTs for learning.
