Black and Indigenous Praxis for Reimagining Conference Participation

Fri, April 12, 3:05 to 4:35pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

This collaborative research paper reflects on academic conferences through a lens of anticolonial and anti-capitalist solidarities. As Black and Indigenous scholars of various backgrounds, life experiences, and knowledges, the three authors share an experience that brought us together to critically reflect on conferences. We discuss what this experience has revealed to us by allowing it to lead us into a year-long co-constructed autoethnographic study informed by Black and Indigenous methods of critical place inquiry and counter-storytelling. This research responds directly to the theme of the 2024 AERA annual meeting, “Dismantling Racial Injustice and Constructing Educational Possibilities,” and the call for us to address the interlocking forms of oppression that continue to uphold colonialism and racial capitalism within and beyond academia.
