The goal of the study is to investigate the effects of a ten-week music and movement-based phonemic awareness intervention. Two participating kindergarten teachers in the study, implementing the program to support students’ word study needs, with an emphasis on children who are emergent multilingual learners. Data collection included teach interviews, pre- and post-intervention, and pre- and post-assessments of the children using the Yopp’s (1995) A test for assessing phonemic awareness in young children. Analysis of interview and assessment data show that the teacher participants increased their understanding of how to support their students’ phonemic awareness and word study. The study also revealed that using music and movement as a regular part of literacy instruction had a marked improvement in student motivation.
