Expectancy-value motivation (EVM) is a major motivation construct for physical education students. Recent research suggests that students may form motivation profiles based on the content and antecedent variables related to the content such as gender in physical education. The purpose of this study was to determine high school students’ profiles as a function of gender in relation to their knowledge about physical activity. Students of ninth grade (n = 886) provided EVM and knowledge data with self-identified gender identity. Analysis revealed four EVM profiles with gender inclinations in physical education. Knowledge, however, did not differ among the profiles. The findings suggested a need to adopt motivation strategies in curriculum design and instruction that consider the characteristics of the profiles.
