This study investigates the relationship between GPA and transfer out status among graduate international students at a public university. To better understand the association between academic performance and retention, the quantitative study utilized an independent t test and chi-square tests of association to guide the analysis. Data was gathered from 440 graduate level students in a Midwest public research university. Quantitative analyses revealed statistically significant differences in academic performance in relation to transfer out status. International students who transferred out after one semester had a mean GPA of 1.14 lower than those who did not transfer out. The results suggest the importance of academics in retention strategies.
