Improving Implementation of a Constructively Aligned Program: Balancing Fidelity and Agency

Sun, April 14, 3:05 to 4:35pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

This study aimed to improve a large-scale curriculum redesign at a US research university by addressing implementation fidelity and faculty agency challenges. Two interventions were used: course fact sheets and an online orientation module. Quantitative results showed that faculty using fact sheets had higher knowledge and confidence in fidelity practices. However, while still significant, the impact on faculty agency was smaller. The orientation module had no significant effect. Qualitative findings revealed that fact sheets increased faculty awareness of course alignment and provided guardrails for agency. However, faculty desired more understanding of decisions impacting their agency. Overall, course fact sheets showed promise in enhancing implementation fidelity, but further support is needed to bolster faculty agency in large-scale curriculum redesigns.
