In this paper, three researchers offer tenants of Hip Hop Methodologies (HHM) with the primary goal of supporting the growth of Hip Hop Education intervention research. For too long within the academy, an over reliance on quantitative research methods as the “most rigorous” has created barriers for the publishing of Hip Hop scholarship. While the purpose of this study is not to suggest peer-reviewed scholarship is the best way or only way to advance our field, the authors do acknowledge the placement of Hip Hop education research in top-tier journals is an essential piece of the puzzle. Thus, this paper opens with an overview of the need for a HHM, through the interrogation of traditional approaches to research. Then, through illustrative examples of their respective research, the authors both theoretically and practically detail the core components of Hip Hop Methodologies.
