Teacher identity stands at the core of the teaching profession. However, few studies have focused on exemplary teacher identity which may influence new teacher identity and guide their sustainable development. To address this gap, this study interviewed a type of exemplary teacher in China (i.e., Special Rank Teacher, N = 32) and identified 12 common core characteristics for three categories. Many of them are shared in the Western contexts, especially in the case of automated learning and effective teaching. Regarding professional responsibility, there are some characteristics that appear to be inherited from the ideas of Confucius. These characteristics may trigger teacher reflection and policy reform on teacher professionalism to promote educational equity and enhance outcomes for all students.
