Work-Based Learning Through the GLOBE Program: Equitably Developing STEM Skills While Supporting Environmental Sustainability

Sat, April 13, 11:25am to 12:55pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

This paper discusses the results from a form of work-based learning (WBL) that addresses STEM equity and environmental sustainability, as well as workforce development. Called GLOBE: Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment, this form of WBL expands the traditional definition of a “workplace” to include “the field” and the classroom as legitimate places of inquiry and contribution to science for young citizen/community scientists. Career development is an intentional component, through the engagement of NASA scientists as well as the in-situ experience. The paper describes how GLOBE aligns to the definition of WBL in Perkins V and presents data showing how GLOBE efforts at several NASA-funded sites have supported STEM engagement, learning, and identity for students from underserved communities.
