Centering Multiracial Teachers’ Voices: Lived Experiences and Sense of Belonging in Educational Spaces

Sun, April 14, 3:05 to 4:35pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

Multiracial educators have unique experiences and narratives that they are often unable to fully embrace within schools. Many schools are still operating under static and narrow-minded understandings of race. Monoraciality and Eurocentric ideologies continue to dominate conversations in schools, limiting educational opportunities for multiracial students and teachers. With proper guidance and tools, this community can dismantle racial injustice surrounding multiraciality and highlight implications within schools. Qualitative data was collected through interviews, then analyzed and coded for themes. The findings highlighted how participants used their experiences of navigating life as multiracial individuals to create safe and welcoming spaces for students. Multiracial educators shared their unique perspectives on identity and how conversations regarding race and identity can propel antiracist work in schools.
