Pair Programming With Industry Professionals: A Systematic Literature Review

Sat, April 13, 11:25am to 12:55pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

Pair programming, also known as pairing, has been extensively studied in the context of higher education. However, there is a need to investigate its effectiveness when applied to professional developers in the industry. This systematic literature review aims to fill this research gap by examining studies conducted with industry professionals. Unlike academic settings, professionals face unique challenges such as legacy codebases and complex team dynamics that extend beyond a single semester. By adopting a perspective rooted in social cognitive theory, this paper explores the factors, outcomes, and methodological approaches that have been predominantly studied in the context of professional pair programming. The findings of this review identify what areas have been most studied with professionals and opportunities for further research.
