Hundreds of children are expelled or suspended from childcare every day in our country, but little research examines what happens to children who have been excluded from care. The present study examines the characteristics of childcare arrangements parents make following their child’s expulsion. Specifically, we seek to understand how parents perceive the programs caring for their children and whether children who are excluded go on to enroll in subsequent childcare arrangements that are of lower quality, less affordable, or less convenient. The findings from this study will clarify some of the short-term impacts of exclusionary discipline on young children and their families.
