Elementary Students’ Reflection on Embodied and Digital Data Literacy Representations

Sat, April 13, 9:35 to 11:05am, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

This paper aims to explore elementary students’ reflections on an embodied data literacy activity to understand how they perceive embodied representations of networked data and its relation to representations in a digital network visualization tool. Embodiment has been recognized as a valuable resource for data science education (e.g., D’Ignazio & Klein, 2020). This project designed an embodied activity as an introduction to subsequent data literacy activity in the digital network tool. Thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2012) is used to analyze students’ post-interviews to gain insights into the current design of the embodied activity. This paper concludes with four themes derived from students’ interviews on the use of embodied and digital representations in this project.
