Achieving Authentic Diversity: Addressing African American Faculty Misrepresentation in Kinesiology Programs

Fri, April 12, 4:55 to 6:25pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

This study used a narrative inquiry approach that is influenced by Intersectionality Theory and Organizational Socialization Theory to uncover the lived experiences of African American faculty within Kinesiology programs at Predominantly White Institutions (PWI’s). Six participants engaged in interviews that chronicled their experiences and provided actionable strategies to help support current African American faculty within Kinesiology programs at PWIs. Three themes surfaced from the interviews: a lack of prior knowledge concerning Kinesiology, profound gender inequity and a lack of support for African American faculty members. Participants also provided several strategies that institutions can use to create a supportive environment for African American faculty members.
