Cultural Capital and School Belonging: Does Social Trust Matter?

Thu, April 11, 7:00am to 11:55pm, I-Presentation Gallery, I-Presentation Gallery

Abstract

This study examines whether the relationship between cultural possessions and youths’ connectedness to school varies across nations. Using the OECD Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2018, the author finds that youths from culturally affluent families tend to feel more connected to school. However, the positive association of cultural resources at home with youths’ sense of belonging to school is mitigated by their communication with teacher. A cross-level interaction effect analysis shows that contextual social trust alleviates inequality in youths’ connection to school due to cultural capital. Results of this study advocate more inclusive and equitable education policy which designs specific interventions for the underprivileged youths at both country and individual levels.
