Arab Teachers Face Racism, Alienation, and Inequality in Jewish Schools

Abstract

Studies prove that multicultural integration may reduce inequality, alienation, and racism. Despite this, Arab teachers find it challenging to integrate into Jewish schools and to deal with expressions of racism and violence. This qualitative study illuminates the challenges of 19 Arab Muslim females aged 25-32, with teaching experience of two to ten years, through open in-depth interviews. The study's findings indicate that the teachers experience emotional, social, and cultural challenges closely related to the context of the negative stereotypes of the Israeli-Arab conflict. It was also found that despite the difficulties, the teachers chose to stay at the Jewish school, and none reported a desire to return to teaching at a school in the Arab sector.
