This qualitative research investigated the development of preservice teachers’ perceptions of global citizenship education after they participated in a one-year virtual global engagement project. 48 participants shared their understandings at different stages of this project via multiple data sources. The results indicated that the authentic experience of teaching in multicultural environments can deepen their understanding of global citizenship education. They not only expressed the importance of implementing global citizenship education but also gained practical teaching strategies through this experience. They also demonstrated great improvement as global citizens themselves. Overall, virtual global engagement as an emerging model after the pandemic provided strong evidence for preparing preservice teachers for global citizenship education.
