There is a great focus nationally on addressing an imbalance in the racial makeup of our nation’s teachers. In public schools, Black teachers make up 14 percent of the staff and Hispanic teachers,17 percent (NCES, 2020). Non-Hispanic white Americans make up about 60 percent of the population but represent 79 percent of the teaching staff at public schools (NCES, 2020). As a PWI, our teacher education program faces challenges to better train the majority white students enrolled in our teacher education program to be more effective in urban classrooms, while also addressing the need to recruit more students of color into the profession. This two-tiered study addresses how our faculty have strengthened our program to best address these imbalances.
