In Roundtable Session: Authoring the Self and Others (Table 21)
In this study, the researchers apply Critical Race Nepantlera Methodology to a narrative inquiry of field notes and interview transcripts collected before, during, and after the 2022-2023 school year. The data centers the experience of K, an educator and Black woman, during her first-year of teaching in a predominantly White, Texas suburb. Through this inquiry, we identified narrative threads that reflect challenges and racism K experienced at an elementary school. We also found that K leveraged her black motherhood to resist and navigate the challenges she experienced and maintain a warm demander stance. Through analysis of the experiences of People of Color, we can learn to resist and navigate challenges, ultimately leading towards emancipatory educational practice and changes to policy.
