Globally, women doctoral students’ enrolment in higher education institutions has grown significantly during the past few decades, while media have been covering testimonies of women being exposed to greater challenges and stresses in relation to their gender, age, and marital status during their PhD studies. Despite this, there is limited qualitative research paying attention to exhausted female PhD students regarding their own experience of burnout. In our study, we referred to phenomenological interpretative analysis for methods of data collection and analysis and included six female doctoral students for in-depth investigation. Three dominant themes with sub-themes emerged from our analysis. The results call for the development of targeted interventions to prevent, anticipate, or ease the phenomenon of exhaustion among female doctoral students.
