This study explores pedagogical values and challenges in preparing art teachers for social justice art education through action research. Sharing commitment to anti-racist, anti-oppressive education, two teacher educators have developed interdisciplinary curricula and pedagogy. This paper particularly examines two artistic expression methods, 3D printing and portrait, as pedagogical approaches to visualize preservice teachers’ understanding of counternarratives of women suffrage and school (de)segregation histories. Based on the student learning outcomes and their art productions, the paper demonstrates how art facilitates the visualization of social issues and larger structural contexts, as well as fostering personal connections with social movements.
