Exploring Patterns of Literacy Instruction and Student Achievement in Hawaiʻi (Poster 32)

Sat, April 13, 3:05 to 4:35pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall A

Abstract

In 2019, the Hawaiʻi Department of Education (HIDOE) received the federal Comprehensive Literacy State Development grant to advance student literacy skills. During the 2022-23 academic year, a partnership between the University of Hawaiʻi and HIDOE collected data on elementary and secondary teachers’ use of evidence-based literacy practices (EBLP) for teaching literacy. These data are then matched to student-level ELA achievement data. This study examines how teacher use of EBLPs correlated with student achievement growth in ELA across six Complex Areas located on Oahu and the island of Hawaiʻi. Results on the extent of teacher use of EBLPs and how these efforts correlated with student achievement in ELA will provide novel evidence to HIDOE on teachers’ literacy practices.
