Initial Psychometric Evaluation and Cross-Cultural Generalization of the Resilience Evaluation Scale

Sun, April 14, 11:25am to 12:55pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

The Resilience Evaluation Scale (RES) is a newly developed instrument written in both English and Dutch to measure resilience. There has not been any comprehensive psychometric evaluation conducted of the RES or its performance across Western and Eastern cultural populations and languages. We conducted a psychometric evaluation of the RES in a Western, English-speaking sample of U.S. students. Then, we tested the measurement invariance of the RES between the U.S. student sample, and an Eastern, Chinese-speaking student sample. Results indicated that additional research is needed to assess whether the RES appropriately measures internal factors of resilience or requires modification. The findings also highlighted the need for cross-culturally valid measures of resilience that better fit different culture and language populations.
