Warm Demanders in the Classroom: Asset-Based Equity Pedagogy as a Tool to Interrupt Injustices

Sat, April 13, 7:45 to 9:15am, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

Scholars have noted the need for asset-based equity pedagogies (Hinnant-Crawford et al., 2022) which focus on building upon the strengths of the student in order to combat deficit-based views built into the system of schooling. An essential aspect of asset-based pedagogy is the practice of being a Warm Demander. A Warm Demander (WD) is a teacher who has high expectations of their students (both academically and behaviorally) yet conveys a care (or warmth) for their students. The research questions that guided this study were: what knowledge factors or characteristics do Warm Demanders have and how do students respond to Warm Demanders? How can teachers become Warm Demanders?
