In seeking to understand how Early Career Educators of Color (ECEoCs) are prepared to serve Black and Brown students who seek disability-related support, a DisCrit and racial literacies-informed framework was engaged to interrogate deficit narratives about race and disability in PK-12/teacher education. In partnership with community-embedded organizations, researchers conducted qualitative individual and focus group interviews with ECEoCs who had taken a Special Education course, and Caregivers of Color who support Black or Brown students seeking/receiving disability-related services. We explore how teachers and families experience racism and ableism in their schooling, and the need for teacher education programs to meaningfully engage with these topics to prepare anti-racist and anti-ableist teachers.
