The research aims to incorporate failure and iteration as positive forces in educational experiences and challenge conventional perceptions of failure. The study explored moments of failure in the engineering design phase during family-based activities at home. Positive iterative failure moments were common, where families utilized problem-solving heuristics to resolve unexpected outcomes. Negative moments of failure also occurred. The paper suggests the need for additional support to guide families through such moments, ensuring that failure is seen as a productive learning opportunity. This study seeks to inform kit and activity designers to offer appropriate support that helps caregivers and children navigate failure effectively, fostering positive and productive outcomes in open-ended engineering design projects conducted at home.
