Daoist Conceptualization of Time: Implications for Reconceptualizing the Ecological System Theory

Abstract

This study examines the Daoist conceptualization of time and its implications for reconceptualizing the ecological system theory. Drawing on Daoist literature, this conceptual paper provides an understanding of the past, the present, and the future from a relational perspective. Analyses suggest that different from a linear and transitory view, Daoist time underlines both timeliness and timelessness. This reconceptualization challenges the human-centered nested systems and the causal assumptions embedded in the ecological system theory. The research outlines an alternative relational framework building on the Daoist understanding of time and the inseparability of humanity and nature. This indigenous framework that interrupts human-centeredness and social inequality is informative in enhancing human fullness and generating educational possibilities.
